  • Pints for Parrots

    Aug 11th, 2018
    4:00pm - 8:00pm
    The Parrot Bar and Grill

Enjoy a few pints for parrots! Join us for a fun-filled evening on August 11 to support the future of the beautiful Hyacinth macaw. All of the funds raised from Pints for Parrots will benefit the ongoing work of the Hyacinth Macaw Project. This new event will feature a raffle auction and a 50/50 raffle and best of all, The Parrot Bar and Grill will be donating $1 for any pint of beer sold!

The Hyacinth Macaw Project involves research, management, and conservation of the species. In carrying out these objectives, biologists, veterinarians, field workers, ranchers, and university students share in activities ranging from technical studies on reproduction, behavior, and habitat to environmental education.

With their bright blue feathers and yellow-ringed eyes, the hyacinth macaw is both visually stunning as well as being the largest flying parrot with wingspans exceeding 4 feet. Tragically, their beauty contributed to a massive illegal trade. In the 1980s alone, at least 10,000 birds were taken from the wild for pets. During this era, Neiva Guedes, a 27-year-old biology student, was touring Brazil’s Pantanal ecosystem. As a flock of these macaws flew by, her professor lamented they would likely be extinct in their lifetime - as few as 2,500 remained. That moment changed Neiva’s life forever - and the future of the hyacinth macaw.

By 1990, Neiva had started the Hyacinth Macaw Project, known locally as Projeto Arara Azul. Today, the project covers nearly one million acres. Best of all, the hyacinth macaw population has more than doubled to 6,500. Despite the difficulties, Neiva remains full of passion. The challenge is for the rest of us to help her fulfill a shared vision where future generations can still be as inspired as she was by flocks of these bright blue macaws flying freely above the forests of South America.
