Day 1  Touchdown in Tanzania
Your safari begins as you land and enjoy your first breaths of Africa. Tauck and your zoo hosts are there to greet you at Kilimanjaro International Airport and escort you to Arumeru River Lodge just thirty minutes away. Your African lodge, set in dreamlike tropical gardens, is located on the grounds of an old coffee farm a short drive. On clear days, you can see the famous mountain in the distance!

Day 2  Arusha or Kilimanjaro
A choice of adventures awaits. For the adventurous, join Tim on a hike in Kilimanjaro National Park. While we won't be going all the way to the top, you'll take an exciting walk up and down the famous Marangu Route. We'll look for wildlife and even visit the traditional home of a member of the Chagga tribe. Or you can join Doug on a full-day game drive in Arusha National Park to look for gentle giraffes, boisterous baboons, colorful flamingoes and big buffalo. Later, we all meet back at the lodge for a welcome dinner.

Day 3  Experience Tarangire
Head to Tarangire National Park today – the place where life began, according to Maasai legend. Marvel at the classic African savannah stretching out all around us with wildlife-rich plains home to Greater kudu and other iconic species. Hop aboard our open-topped safari vehicles for an afternoon game drive; look for big cats lounging under the giant baobab trees or elephants cooling off at a watering hole. Enjoy dinner and the evening at Tarangire Safari Lodge.

Day 4:Game Drives in the Bush
An up-close look at wildlife in Tarangire today begins with a morning game drive to Silale Swamp. After returning to the lodge for lunch and some down time, head back out into the bush for an afternoon game drive. Later, we'll take in the incredible vista from "The Viewpoint" and nosh on a barbecue dinner in the bush. Following dinner, join members of a local Maasai and learn about traditional dances and pick up some Swahili around the campfire !

Day 5  Students and Lake Manyara
Make your way to the Ngorongoro Conservation Area today, stopping for lunch in Lake Manyara National Park, and then at a new primary school that Tauck helps support, for a visit with the students and teacher. Continue on to your colonial lodge in Karatu, where your cottage-style accommodations for the next two nights overlook a coffee plantation and the eastern wall of the Ngorongoro Crater.

Day 6 A Day in the Crater
Today offers an extraordinary experience as we drive down into giant unbroken, unflooded caldera - once a mountain nearly as tall as Kilimanjaro. This geologic wonder is home to over 25,000 large animals including the critically endangered black rhinoceros. Game drives and a unique picnic lunch on the crater floor also offer ample opportunities to spot lions, cheetahs, hippos and lots of birds. Then it's back to our lodge in Karatu for the evening.

Day 7 Archaeology Comes Alive
Today we head out to Oldupai Gorge in the Great Rift Valley, where anthropologists Louis and Mary Leakey found the fossilized remains of nutcracker man (Paranthropus boisei). We'll check out the Oldupai Museum and enjoy a talk by a docent. Then it's into the endless plains of the vast Serengeti. We'll game drive to look for leopards in the trees on our way to the Four Seasons Safari Lodge Serengeti, in the heart of world-famous Serengeti National Park, where we'll spend three luxurious African nights.

Day 8  Take Flight Over the Serengeti
Rise early for a whole new angle on the landscapes and wildlife of Serengeti National Park – an unforgettable ride over the vast Serengeti plains in a hot air balloon – followed by a champagne breakfast in the bush and some game viewing later in the morning. After lunch at the lodge, look for zebras, hyenas, leopards and more on an afternoon game drive with your local guide. Back at your Four Seasons lodge tonight, enjoy a special dinner, where we'll have more stories to share.

Day 9  Maasai Traditions and Final Game Drive
Learn about Masaai crafts and local conservation projects at the lodge's Discovery Center and Masaai staff. After lunch, enjoy a farewell game drive in Serengeti National Park to experience the unforgettable spectacle of Africa's circle of life, right before your eyes! Equally impressive are Tanzania's magical sunsets, which you'll enjoy during a farewell reception on the terrace of the lodge, followed by a festive farewell dinner and some authentic Maasai fun.

Day 10 Shopping and Coffee in Arusha
This morning we drive to the air strip in Serengeti for a quick flight back to Arusha where we'll have lunch and shop for carvings, Tanzanite, and more at the Cultural Heritage Center. Afterwards, we'll have a guided tour of a local coffee plantation. Flights home depart Africa late tonight. We'll have reserved day rooms back at the Arumeru River Lodge so we can repack and relax. A transfer is included from Arumeru River Lodge to Kilimanjaro International Airport this evening.
