Saving Giraffe in Uganda

By Tim Tetzlaff, Director of Conservation I wanted to share some thoughts on giraffe as World Giraffe Day is coming up (June 21). Giraffes are already top of mind for me as we’re currently creating a new elevated giraffe viewing area here at the zoo. It got me reflecting on these giants and for some reason firsts stick in my mind and so I’m sharing the photos that go with them. Oddly enough, my first giraffe memories are life-size fiberglass giraffes in the Cedar Point theme park... Read More

Helping Panamanian Golden Frog Conservation

By Vittoria Vaturi, Naples Zoo Reptile Keeper   Growing up, my love for nature and wildlife started with amphibians. I have early memories of being in my backyard watching frogs jumping into a pond and living their natural lives. It was at that moment I knew I wanted a career with wildlife. I made that dream a reality when I became a reptile keeper here at Naples Zoo. My dreams came true again this year when I traveled to El Valle, Panama to help with Project Golden Frog. Project Gol... Why You Should Spend More Time Outside

By Stacy Graison, Director of Education Go outside! You can do it! It seems like the simplest request. We all went outside as kids. In fact, many of us were told to go outside and don’t come home until dinner. Today, spending time outside everyday seems to have more challenges. It’s too hot. It isn’t safe. There isn’t enough time. But what if I told you that each day is a missed opportunity for you to bond with your children, restore your mental state (this can... Read More

Lions, Leopards, and Lemurs - Oh, My! Now is the Perfect Time to Become a Zoo Member

By Kelsey Burr, Naples Zoo Marketing Associate   There are eight adorable reasons to become a Naples Zoo Member this year! We’ve had quite the baby boom: two clouded leopard girls born in February, three red-ruffed lemur brothers born in early May, and three lion brothers born May 14. After a community-wide naming contest, the lion cubs were named Karoo, Ruaha, and Chobe, after three national parks in Africa. While all of our zoo babies this year were exciting, these lion cubs ... First Visit Back - Intern Feature: Connor Bligh

By Connor Bligh, Marketing/PR Intern   As someone who was born and raised in Naples, I do not exaggerate when I say coming to the Zoo was my childhood. Throughout elementary school, I came to the Zoo a couple times a week as a Zoo member with my mom. Heck, I was even featured on a brochure for the Zoo! As I grew older, my schedule got busier, with school, sports, and clubs completely replacing the spot the Zoo had in my life. My attendance might have vanished, but my passion never did.... Read More

An Orphaned Anteater Named Tim

Earlier in July, a newborn giant anteater was found abandoned in a pasture in Brazil. He was unresponsive and severely dehydrated, likely just hours from passing away. With no mother to be found, he was taken to Instituto Estadual Florestal (IEF) where caregivers found he weighed just 2.5 pounds. Luckily, he was still able to suckle fluids and showed signs he might recover. Over the last few days, his condition has improved and he now has a voracious appetite and demands to be fed every two h... Read More

A Love of Palm Trees

By Darryl Windham, Horticulture Manager   Nothing adds a tropical ambiance to gardens quite like palm trees.  Naples Zoo at Caribbean Gardens is uniquely situated in a part of Florida that can grow a wide variety of palms beyond the twelve species native to the state.  There are 2,600 species of palms known to science.  They occur on every continent, with the exception of Antarctica, and inhabit a wide variety of ecosystems.  Some interesting facts about palms is th...
